Love handles

At a certain moment in life all of us are confronted with the fact that our body is not 18 anymore… Do you find your area around the middle is expanding or just heading due south? Is buttoning those pants getting harder and harder? Are you finding the 15 years spent on your backside watching Monday Night Football, eating chips and drinking beer has finally caught up with you and you’re sporting love handles? You’re definitely not the only one and there is good news for you.

If you have too much flesh around your stomach you need to strengthen your abs. This is beneficial for both men and women as stronger abs lead to fewer lower back problems. When you strengthen one you strengthen the other. Some simple exercises to lose those love handles are sit ups and stomach crunches.

Specifically for the lower back you can try lying on your stomach. Lifting your feet and knees off of the floor and gently kicking your legs as if you were swimming. Do this for 15 seconds and rest for 30 and repeat.

You may wish to cut sodium and sodium rich foods from your diet. We tend to associate sodium and sodium rich foods with heart disease and stroke. Sodium also leads to water retention which can make love handles look even worse. Avoid processed foods and adding extra salt. Drinking water can also help you to lose those love handles. Water not only helps keep the body hydrated it helps your body metabolize stored fat into energy and reduces your appetite.

You may consider reducing your alcohol intake as well. I’m sure that you’re just as disappointed as I was to find that alcohol doesn’t perform the same function as water being that they are both liquid. Alcohol contains a lot of what is called empty calories which for men tend to get deposited around the middle area resulting in love handles. You do not need to cut alcohol out completely, just keep a tally of how much you drink and cut it back; just as you would if you were watching what you eat.

Finally, consider doing cardio exercises. Any calories you burn off will not end up on your stomach. This doesn’t mean spending 3 hours a day in the gym necessarily. If you only have a small love handles to lose doing simple things like walking, or taking the stairs could be enough. If you have several pounds to lose more intense cardio may be needed. However, start small and build up. Love handles do not have to be a permanent fixture. There are simple, non evasive proven methods that will help you tone up and improve your general fitness. These will not only make you look better but live longer.
